Murray Abraham superbly casts this character. it has been maintained that the character of Salieri remains the motivating force at the core of the action in the film, although Mozart’s personality has been considerably expanded. Lord Byron Essay Lord Byron is considered to be one of the most important poet in his time. He was as famous for his personality as he was for his poetry. The way his life affected what he wrote made his poems even better. His works, life, and writing style are what made Lord Byron one of the most important poets of the Romantic Movement. George Gordon Noel Byron (Lord Byron) was born on January 22, 1788 in London, England. His dad, Captain â€Å"Mad Jack† Byron married his mother, Catherine Gordon, for her money. Throughout their marriage he spent away most of her fortune before he died in 1791. When Lord Byron’s father died he was left with nothing. After his father died he seemed to have a long life ahead of him. He had a birth defect that made him walk on his toes for his entire life and his mother was unstable. Lord Byron took out his stress by writing poetry. When he was only eight years old he fell in love. When he turned sixteen years old he was told that the woman he loved was engaged. He became very depressed and felt very ill. In 1798 his granduncle died and Lord Byron inherited his uncles estate. Now that he had some money, he went to Trinity College after spending his time from 1801 to 1805 at Harrow. In 1808, he planned to spend the year with his cousin, George Bettesworth. He was the captain of his own ship and in May of 1808 he died in the Battle of Alvon. So, from 1809 to 1811 Lord Byron spent the years cruising the Mediterranean. The Napoleonic Wars were going on in Europe at this time so he had to avoid most of Europe. During this time Lord Byron’s first book of poetry, Hours of Idleness, was published in 1809. The two-year Mediterranean trip gave him most of the material he wrote about in Childe Harold’s Pilgrimage. These two cantos were the first great successes he had. In 1813 Lord Byron apparently had more than a brother-sister relationship with his half sister Augusta Leigh. She was already the mother of three children. She gave birth to Elizabeth Medora in 1814. Elizabeth was thought by many people to be Lord Byron’s child, but in 1815 he married Anne Isabella Milbanke. They had a child named Ada in the same year, but the marriage did not last and they separated the next year. In 1816 Byron left England when rumors started of his debts. He was never to return back to England in his life. The only virtue they honor in England is hypocrisy, (Liukkonen, Petri) he wrote in a letter to his friend when he left England. He settled in Geneva, where he meant Claire Clairmont. She became his mistress, but at the end of summer he moved again. He spent two years working and writing in Italy. I was struck by his eyes I have never in my life seen anything more beautiful or more expressive, (Liukkonen, Petri) is a quote from a French writer that saw Lord Byron at an opera in Italy. While in Italy he, wrote several poems including Lament of Tasso, Mazeppa, and The Prophecy of Dante. During his stays in Italy he became very interested in drama. He wrote several dramas including The Two Foscari, Sardanapalaus, and many others. In January of 1817, Claire Clairmont gave birth to his daughter Clara Allegra. Lord Byron abandoned his daughter and she died in 1822 with a bad case of typhus fever. In Italy, he risked his life helping a secret group called the Italian Carbonari in 1820 and 1821. In 1824 he decided to take action and move to Greece. He joined a group called the Greek freedom fighters. By this time he was in Missolonghi, Greece. He unfortunately died here on April 19, 1824 of a fever. Lord Byron is the most well known of the famous romantic poets. His poetry had a recurring theme of being romantic. Lord Byron wrote many long romantic poems and some shorter ones in a traditional satirical style of poetry. His poems all varied in their subject matter. A lot of his romantic poems were about the many women he was involved with. An example would be the poem She Walks in Beauty, it is a poem about how beautiful he thought the woman he was in love with was. His poems also were about things he believed in. The poem, The Destruction of Sennacherib, shows that Lord Byron shared his religious views in his poetry. Throughout his travels he went to many places that were inspiration for his poetry. The Lament of Tasso was written when he was in Rome. He visited Tassos cell, which inspired him to right the poem. His vary in types of poetry and subject matter helped his poetry stay popular. Lord Byron’s poetry has many connections with what was going on in his life. He first started writing poetry to release the stress of the birth defect that he was born with. His different kinds of poetry were all connected with his life. He was most known for his romantic poetry. In these poems, he wrote about the relationships he had with woman. The places he travelled also influenced his poetry. His travels in Italy got him into drama and that was result of many of his best poems. How religious he was and how much he cared about what was going on around him showed in his life and in his poetry. He wrote about and it was also the reason he chose to move to Greece to help them rise over their rulers by joining the Greek freedom fighters. The connection between his life and his poetry is what made him as popular as he was. Lord Byron was one of the most famous and talented writers of his time. His life, poetry, and the way they were connected are what made him one of the most famous poets of his time. His poetry was an influence on the writing of other poets in his time and continues to influence poets today.

Job Satisfaction and Dissatisfaction of Teaching Personnel at Udm

CHAPTER I THE PROBLEM AND ITS BACKGROUND INTRODUCTION Teachers play a vital role in building a nation. They are arguably one of the most important groups of professionals for our nation’s future. It is disturbing to find out that many of today’s unsung heroes like teachers are dissatisfied with their jobs. Ask anyone in the street how to motivate teachers and they will blatantly answer to increase their salaries. Ask what factors might have created dissatisfaction among teachers and probably they will enumerate factors like behavior of students, class size, curriculum, and the government policies in education.According to Herzberg Motivation-Hygiene Theory, the factors causing satisfaction are different from those causing dissatisfaction, the two feelings cannot simply be treated as opposites of one another. The opposite of satisfaction is not dissatisfaction, but rather, no satisfaction. Similarly, the opposite of dissatisfaction is nodissatisfaction. While at first gl ance this distinction between the two opposites may sound like a play on words, Herzberg argued that there are two distinct human needs portrayed.First, there are physiological needs that can be fulfilled by money, for example, to purchase food and shelter. Second, there is the psychological need to achieve and grow, and this need is fulfilled by activities that cause one to grow. Many factors have been examined in an attempt to find which one promotes motivation. In the study conducted by Poling (1990), he pointed out that Pay incentives have been found to be unsuccessful in increasing motivation.In a similar study, Castillo and Cano (1999), concluded that teachers motivation is based on their freedom to try new ideas, achievements and intrinsic work elements. Whereas, schemes such as merit pay were predicted to be counterproductive. They explained that true job satisfaction is derived from the gratification of higher order needs than lower order needs. Educators’ decision t o leave and remain in the teaching profession is associated with his level of motivation and job satisfaction.The elusive nature of job satisfaction construct advanced the measurement and theoretical development to job satisfaction (Castillo, 199). Job satisfaction is an intangible notion that has been increasingly challenged and refined since the Herzberg, Mauser and Snyderman study in 1959. Although, the foundation of job satisfaction and job motivation was introduced by Maslow in his hierarchy of needs. Maslow (1954) asserts that human motives emerge sequentially to satisfy the following needs: physiological, safety, social, self-esteem and self-actualization.Individual need satisfaction is influenced by both the importance attached to the various needs and the degree to which each individual fulfil each needs. A teaching profession is the one of the most important profession at all. Teachers devote a lot of their energy, time and interest to educate new generations. Like any oth er professions, teaching has some specific particularity and pitfalls. In this study, I looked into the motivating and hygiene factors that affect the performance of the faculty of Universidad de Manila.There is a need to conduct this study because Faculty members are the frontrunners of the nation’s future generations. It is quite disturbing to know that there are certain factors that affect the job performance of the faculty members based on the evaluation conducted by the Faculty and Employees Performance Evaluation Office of Universidad De Manila The topic was chosen to determine the factors, both motivating and hygiene that pleases and displeases the faculty members of Universidad De Manila. And identify those factors that affect in the job performance of the faculty members.The purpose of this study is to properly identify the motivating and hygiene factors in relation to the job performance of the faculty members, which will be beneficial for the organization in enrich ing and improving whatever is necessary for the organization’s growth. STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM This study will determine the motivating and hygiene factors in relation to job performance of the faculty members of Universidad De Manila (UDM). Specifically, the study will answer the following questions; 1. What is the profile of the faculty members of the Universidad De Manila in terms of: 1. Is there a significant difference between UDM teaching personnel’s’ motivating and hygiene factors in relation to job performance? HYPOTHESIS The following null hypothesis was formulated and tested at 0. 05 levels of significance: 1. There is no significant relationship between UDM teaching personnel demographic profile and overall job performance? 2. There is no significant relationship between UDM teaching personnel’s’ motivating and hygiene factors in relation to job performance? . There is a significant difference between UDM teaching personnel’s’ motivating and hygiene factors in relation to job performance? THEORETICAL FRAMEWORK Theories of job satisfaction included discrepancy theory(Locke, 1969), equity theory (Mowday, 1992) and the motivator-hygiene theory (Herzberg, Mauser and Snyderman , 1959). The discrepancy theory was the result of the difference between an actual outcome a person receive and some other expected outcome level which may cause job satisfaction/ dissatisfaction. (Lawler, 1973).Inputs and outputs were the basis of the equity theory. Employees evaluated their inputs/outputs by comparing them with that of other individuals. Equity existed if the ratio of the inputs and outputs was similar to the inputs and outputs of other workers. Conversely, there is inequity if the ratio of the inputs and outputs was unequal to the inputs and outputs of other individual. Equity were associated with job satisfaction while inequity with job dissatisfaction (Mowday, 1992). This study is anchored on the two-factor theory of Herzberg.Herzberg, Mauser and Snyderman (1959) pointed out that job satisfaction is not a unidimensional concept but that is composed of two independent factors: 1. Motivational factors itself can lead to job satisfaction; 2. Maintenance factors (hyg iene factors) must be sufficiently present in order for motivational factors to come into play and when not sufficiently present can block motivation and can lead to job dissatisfaction. The environment in cludes interpersonal relations with others, policy and administrations, salary, supervision and working conditions.Many persons who feel dissatisfied draw their dissatisfaction to conditions surrounding their jobs rather than work itself. The other category is the motivating factors, which are found to be effective in motivating people in superior performance. These factors include achievements, growth, recognition, responsibility and work itself. All of these should be working together, to complement and supplement one another. The basic requirement should be provided to the workers as well as the challenge to perform to the maximum capacity and stimulate them to grow to the peak of their performance.This research determined what people or faculty member in particular actually want and what factors made them perform better or lesser on their respective field of teaching. SCOPE AND LIMITATION This study is limited to the motivating and hygiene factors that affect the job performance of Universidad De Manila. The focus of the study is limited to the motivating and hygiene factors that may possibly influence or affect the job performance of the faculty members of Universidad De Manila. Th e target respondents are one hundred faculty members (100), 100 survey questionnaires were given but only 60 was retrieved for the reason that some faculty members are not available at the time of data gathering.This studycovered the direct association of the variate motivating and hygiene factors with the criterion variable job performance. The direct association of the other factors such as age, sex, civil status, academic rank and length of years employed in Universidad De Manila with the variate and criterion variable were sought. DEFINITION OF TERMS The following terms are operationally defined for clearer and better understanding of the study: Age – this refers to entitled period of life or existence as a person.Civil Status – the indicators of this concept are 1) single 2) married Academic Rank – the level of position of faculty members. Motivating Factors – these are the factors that intrinsic in nature and are essential for employees fulfilment. These include achievements, growth, recognition, responsibility, and work Itself. Hygiene Factors – these are the factors that are extrinsic in nature and can be a great deal for achieving organizational objective. These include interpersonal relations, policy and administration, salary, supervision, and working conditions.Job Performance – refers to the quantity and quality of tasks performed by faculty members of Universidad De Manila. Job Satisfaction – set of favourable and unfavourable feelings with which employuees view their work. Curriculum – list of subjects that serve as guide to students as they pursue their respective degrees. However, given that most of the international studies on teacher satisfaction have been conducted in developed countries, one realizes the need in the available literature for similar research in developing countries as well.This paper examines job satisfaction and motivation among teachers in Cyprus – a small developing country in the Eastern Mediterranean. The employees were highly satisfied with the work i tself because they found that their job was interesting, challenging, and enjoyable and had enough authority and freedom to perform their job. Supervision also made employees were highly satisfied because of the high competency in doing job of supervisor and the good encouragement, opportunity to express opinions, support, fairness, and interest in the feelings of subordinates provided by supervisor.The employees were also highly satisfied with coworkers because their coworkers were highly competent in doing their job. They received good cooperation and supports form their coworkers and there were no bickering and fighting at work. However, the employees were moderately satisfied with other worked-related variables, including pay, fringe benefits, opportunity for advancement, contingent rewards, and communication. Asking from the employees perspectives, it appeared that the employees rated pay as the most important factor influencing their job satisfaction followed by fringe benefit s and coworkers.However, the employees at the managerial and non-managerial levels perceived different degrees of importance. The non-managerial employees perceived pay, fringe benefits and coworker as the most three important would be because these motivational factors could fulfill their basic needs according to the Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs (Moorhead and Griffin, 1998). On the other hand, the employees at the managerial level rated coworkers, opportunity for advancement, and work itself as the most important factor influencing their job satisfaction.This might be because a good work group or effective team could easily helped them achieved the best results. Similarly, the work itself allowed them to apply their abilities and skills and embody a diversity of tasks, freedom, and performance feedback. Regarding the relationships between the personal variables of the employees and their job satisfaction, it appeared that there were very little relationships between these two variables. The current research was conducted within one multinational company and therefore would not represent employee’s attitude for the whole industry.Also, theories in motivation and job satisfaction proposed a number of factors affecting employee job satisfaction but only eight work-related factors were identified in this study. Finally, quantitative research was employed to assess employees attitude toward their job in the current study. This study is related to the present study because it classifies the perceptual assessment of teachers in relation to their job satisfaction a nd commitment, which gave the researcher insights in the conceptualization of this study. RELATED LITERATURE According to Kant and Rozenweig, highly motivated individualsgenerally make better workers, achievers and implementors. Their performance greatly depends upon the satisfaction of their needs, wants and climate.This is related to the present study insofar as motivating factors are concerned. It explains that highly motivated individual generally makes a better workers, achievers and implementors, And that performance greatly depends upon the satisfaction of the needs wants and climate which the present study had sought in this present study. Jean Piaget’s theory of environmentalism which she related to effectivity. She said that â€Å"to be an educator implies a fundamental belief of environmentalism. The educator must be an environmentalist.It is through the environment that the most fundamental educational process-learning takes place within the child but is influenc ed by some of the values, attitudes and beliefs of educators in the particular organization. Educators must try to influence the learning process by providing the appropriate climate needs. † This theory of Piaget is somewhat related to the present study because in this theory of environmentalism, teachers is the subject implied, and the present study discusses about the motivating and hygiene factors in relation to job performance of Universidad De Manila Faculty Members.Both used teachers or educators as their subject. Quinn, Robert in his â€Å"Quality of Employment Survey† stated that the quality of work environment determines to a large extent of satisfaction of the people. It would be high when certain specific dimension of satisfaction exist, such as financial reward, comfort, challenge, resource adequacy and harmonious relations with co-workers. This is related to the present study because it discussed about the quality of work environment is the determinant of the extent of work satisfaction of the people.Ramoso in his study on motivational factors affecting performance to teachers in Carmen, Nasipit and Buenavista Districts of the Division of Agusan de Norte. She found out that the most favored motivational factors related to the quality of teachers’ performance were principal’s trust, production emphasis and morale. She said that when teachers felt their school administrators have trust and confidence in them, they were motivated to exert effort thus providing improving the quality of their performance.This is related to the present study because the motivational factors affecting teachers were discussed as well as the quality of teacher’s performance. Ramoso specified the factors affecting the performance of teachers in Carmen, Nasipit and Buenavista Districts of Agusan Del Norte. Joseph Reitz stated that as workers grow older, they tend to be slightly more satisfied with their jobs. This is due to a number of reas ons such as lower expectations and better adjustment to their work situation because of their experience with it.Younger workers tend to be less satisfied because of higher expectations and less adjustment. This is somewhat related to the present study because it deals with the workers satisfaction. The reasons of their satisfaction were also specified. Deci mentioned that people hold positive attitude toward their organization and they experience a high level of job satisfaction when the organization provides them with rewards which they desire. He further assumed that satisfied workers will perform better than unsatisfied workers. He further suggested that satisfying workers is an effective means of motivating them.This is related to the present study because it talk over that people hold a positive attitude toward their organization and they experience a high level of job satisfaction when the organization provides them with rewards which they desire. It was also assumed that sat isfied workers will perform better than the unsatisfied one. Gil stated that the poorer the attitude a teacher has towards his profession, the more unsatisfactory will be his teaching performance. This is related to the present study insofar as attitude has a relationship to one’s performance at work.However, this study has a different setting and it involves elementary school teachers, while the present study has its focus on college professors. In a research that was undertaken by Tsai Min Yen, a teacher. She found out the relationship between job performance and personality traits of faculty members of Nan Tai College of Commerce and Technology. She found out that faculty members performed satisfactorily with various activities related to school work such as administration, organization, consultative and guidance.She further concluded that the satisfaction a faculty member feels in his job is substantially influenced by his personality traits. This is related to the presen t study because it talks about the relationship between job performance and personality traits of faculty members which this present study has also been discussing. This research had concluded that the job satisfaction a faculty feels in his job is substantially influenced by his personality traits. Myers pointed out that motivation tends to be related to the kind of supervisor relationship experienced.He suggests that if a school superintendent develops good interpersonal relationship, the principal in the school system will tend to be more highly motivated. The interpersonal relationships which promote high motivation in a school organization are those which are work-oriented and which free individuals to become self-actualized in their work. This is related in the present study because it pointed out that motivation tends to be related to the kind of supervisor relationship experienced. Myers also suggested that if a school superintendent develops good nterpersonal relationship, the principal in the school system will tend to be more highly motivated. Penley and Hawkins showed that a supervisors receptiveness or willingness to listen to subordinates ideas, problems and concerns will improve the motivation of subordinates. Though such receptiveness, supervisors develop knowledge of areas in which they need to provide additional training or explanation in order to build expectancy that the workers can perform tasks. When employees have a sense of mastery and reward in their jobs, they perform better.This is related to the present study because it showed that a supervisor s receptiveness or willingness to listen to subordinates ideas, problems and concerns will improve the motivation of subordinates. Chapter III METHODOLOGY This chapter discusses the research design used in the study, samples and sampling techniques, instrumentation, data gathering procedures, and statistical treatment of data gathered by the researcher. RESEARCH DESIGN Any scientific process begins with description of an event or events from which theories may be developed to explain phenomenon.In this study, the researcher will use the descriptive research design since this involves observation and description of the behavior of the teaching personnel at Universidad De Manila. Under this design, a descriptive – correlational method will be employed in anylizing the data that will be collected through survey questionnaire. According to Calderon (1993:62), descriptive research is a purposive method of gathering, analysing, classifying, and tabulating data about prevailing conditions or situation.Similarly, Aquino (1992:3) describes descriptive method of research as a process of systematically describing a situation or area of interest factually and accurately. It gives a clear statement of what is existing at the present understanding. Correlation studies are based on quantitative measures on two or more variables. Since the study is correlational in nature, the s tatistical relationship between the level of motivation and the level job satisfaction will be looked into and it give an indication of how one variable may predict the other.However,  the correlation of the variables does not imply causation; that is, simply because two events are in some way correlated (related) does not mean that one necessarily causes the other. SAMPLE AND SAMPLING TECHNIQUES In determining the sample of the study, the researcher will be using a non-probability sampling technique specifically the purposive sampling. Purposive Sampling, according to Blay(2005:12) is a process of choosing the respondents based on the criteria set by the researcher. With this type, the sample is â€Å"hand-picked† for the research.Using purposive sampling allows the researcher to home in on people or events, which have good grounds in what they believe, will be critical for the research. In this study, respondents will be selected in terms of their status in the University . The researcher’s respondents of this study will be the teaching personnel of the Universidad De Manila. The variables that would be measured in the profile of the respondents consists of age, gender, civil status, civil status, number of years employed at UDM and status or academic rank. In determining the level of motivation and level of job satisfaction of the respondents the researcher will use a questionnaire adapted from the study of Jesse F. Seegmiller entitled â€Å"job Satisfaction of Faculty and Staff at the College of Eastern Utah†.The questionnaire consists of the Fac ulty Job Satisfaction/Dissatisfaction scale (Seegmiller,1977) which assessed the dimensions of the Herzberg motivator – hygiene theory. This section consisted of a 51-item five points Likert scale with responses varying from 1 (very dissatisfied) to 5 (very satisfied) which is categorized into three parts – the motivator factors, hygiene factors and the overall job satisfaction. DATA GATHERING PROCEDURES The researcher will ask the permission of the Vice President for Academic Affairs for the conduct of the study.After securing permit, the questionnaires will be distributed to the selected faculty members and the data obtained will be treated statistically using the percentage, mean, standard deviation and the Pearson Correlation Coefficient. The frequency distribution and the percentage will be used to describe the demographic profile of the respondents while the mean and the standard deviation will be used for the overall job satisfaction and the level of job satisfa ction in terms of the job motivator factors and job hygiene factors.In order to establish the significant relationship between the variables of the study, Pearson correlation coefficient will be computed. Also, the researcher will determine if the relationships among the factors are significant and the t test will be computed at 0. 05 levels with a degree of freedom of n1+n2 – 2. STATISTICAL TREATMENT The following are the statistical tools the researcher will be using in the study: 1. The Frequency Counts and Percentages In answering question number 1 of the statement of the problem, the researcher will make use of the frequency count and simple percentage to describe the respondents’ profile. 2.The Weighted Mean. Since the adapted questionnaire is a Likert Scale form, it is deemed proper to describe variables such as level of job satisfaction and level of motivation in terms of a single value that would described the whole set of data and that value is the weighted m ean. The weighted points for each item will be obtained by multiplying the scale value of the responses and the total number of respondents indicating it. The total weighted points is the sum of all the points for each scale value. Weighted mean of each item will be computed by dividing the total weighted point by the total number of responses as shown in the formula: W.M = S V x TWPN Where: SV = Scale Value TWP = Total Weighted Points N = Total Number of respondents 3. In order to find out the relationships of the level of motivation to the level of job satisfaction, the Pearson Correlation Coefficient, r, will be utilized by the researcher. A correlation is a number between -1 and +1 that measures the degree of association between two variables (level of motivation and level of job satisfaction). A positive value for the correlation implies a positive association A negative value for the correlation implies a negative or inverse association.Below is the interpretation of the corre lation coefficient that the researcher will use, -1. 0 to -0. 7 strong negative association. -0. 7 to -0. 3 weak negative association. -0. 3 to +0. 3 little or no association. +0. 3 to +0. 7 weak positive association. +0. 7 to +1. 0 strong positive association. The correlation coefficient will be computed using the formula The variables X and Y will refer to the level of motivation and level of job satisfaction, with mean XBAR and YBAR respectively and standard deviations SX  and SY  respectively. To tell whether or not the relationship is significant, the value of r will be tested at 0. 5 level of significance. As to the profile, the table reveals the chi-square value for the age of the respondents as 0. 488 which is insignificant at 0. 05 level of probability, thus the null hypothesis is accepted.There is no significant relationship between age of the respondents and the performance of the respondents. As to gender, the p-value is 0. 382 which is insignificant, thus the null hypothesis is accepted. This means that in terms of Gender, there is no significant relationship between the gender and the job performance of the respondents. Marital status, as revealed by the table, is not significantly related to the job performance of the respondents which has a p-value of 0. 393. The status of employment is not significantly related to the job performance of the respondents as shown in the above table, the p value of 0. 43 is insignificant at 0. 05 level. Lastly, as to the length of service at UDM, the computed p-value of 0. 213 is insignificant at 0. 05 level of significance, thus the null hypothesis is accepted. There is no significant relationship between the length of service and job performance of the teaching personnel of Universidad De Manila. 5. The Vampire Diaries: The Awakening Chapter Nine

She was not the reincarnation of Katherine. Driving back to the boarding house in the faint lavender hush before dawn, Stefan thought about that. He'd said as much to her, and it was true, but he was only now realizing how long he'd been working toward that conclusion. He'd been aware of Elena's every breath and move for weeks, and he'd catalogued every difference. Her hair was a shade or two paler than Katherine's, and her eyebrows and lashes were darker. Katherine's had been almost silvery. And she was taller than Katherine by a good handspan. She moved with greater freedom, too; the girls of this age were more comfortable with their bodies. Even her eyes, those eyes that had transfixed him with the shock of recognition that first day, were not really the same. Katherine's eyes had usually been wide with childlike wonder, or else cast down as was proper for a young girl of the late fifteenth century. But Elena's eyes met you straight on, looked at you steadily and without flinching. And sometimes they narrowed with determination or challenge in a way Katherine's never had. In grace and beauty and sheer fascination, they were alike. But where Katherine had been a white kitten, Elena was a snow-white tigress. As he drove past the silhouettes of maple trees, Stefan cringed from the memory that sprang up suddenly. He would not think about that, he would not let himself†¦ but the images were already unreeling before him. It was as if the journal had fallen open and he could do no more than stare helplessly at the page while the story played itself out in his mind. White, Katherine had been wearing white that day. A new white gown of Venetian silk with slashed sleeves to show the fine linen chemise underneath. She had a necklace of gold and pearls about her neck and tiny pearl drop earrings in her ears. She had been so delighted with the new dress her father had commissioned especially for her. She had pirouetted in front of Stefan, lifting the full, floor-length skirt in one small hand to show the yellow brocaded underskirt beneath†¦ â€Å"You see, it is even embroidered with my initials. Papa had that done. Mein lieber Papa †¦Ã¢â‚¬  Her voice trailed off, and she stopped twirling, one hand slowly settling to her side. â€Å"But what is wrong, Stefan? You are not smiling.† He could not even try. The sight of her there, white and gold like some ethereal vision, was a physical pain to him. If he lost her, he did not know how he could live. His fingers closed convulsively around the cool engraved metal. â€Å"Katherine, how can I smile, how can I be happy when†¦Ã¢â‚¬  â€Å"When?† â€Å"When I see how you look at Damon.† There, it was said. He continued, painfully. â€Å"Before he came home, you and I were together every day. My father and yours were pleased, and spoke of marriage plans. But now the days grow shorter, summer is almost gone-and you spend as much time with Damon as you do with me. The only reason Father allows him to stay here is that you asked it. Butwhy did you ask it, Katherine? I thought you cared for me.† Her blue eyes were dismayed. â€Å"I do care for you, Stefan. Oh, you know I do!† â€Å"Then why intercede for Damon with my father? If not for you, he'd have thrown Damon out into the street†¦Ã¢â‚¬  â€Å"Which I'm sure would have pleasedyou , little brother.† The voice at the door was smooth and arrogant, but when Stefan turned he saw that Damon's eyes were smoldering. â€Å"Oh, no, that isn't true,† said Katherine. â€Å"Stefan would never wish to see you hurt.† Damon's lip quirked, and he threw Stefan a wry glance as he moved to Katherine's side. â€Å"Perhaps not,† he said to her, his voice softening slightly. â€Å"But my brother is right about one thing at least. The days grow shorter, and soon your father will be leaving Florence. And he will take you with him-unless you have a reason to stay.† Unless you have a husband to stay with . The words were unspoken, but they all heard them. The baron was too fond of his daughter to force her to marry against her will. In the end it would have to be Katherine's decision. Katherine's choice. Now that the subject was broached, Stefan could not keep silent. â€Å"Katherine knows she must leave her father sometime soon-† he began, flaunting his secret knowledge, but his brother interrupted. â€Å"Ah, yes, before the old man grows suspicious,† Damon said casually. â€Å"Even the most doting of fathers must start to wonder when his daughter comes forth only at night.† Anger and hurt swept through Stefan. It was true, then; Damon knew. Katherine had shared her secret with his brother. â€Å"Why did you tell him, Katherine? Why? What can you see in him: a man who cares for nothing but his own pleasure? How can he make you happy when he thinks only of himself?† â€Å"And how can this boy make you happy when he knows nothing of the world?† Damon interposed, his voice razor-sharp with contempt. â€Å"How will he protect you when he has never faced reality? He has spent his life among books and paintings; let him stay there.† Katherine was shaking her head in distress, her jewel-blue eyes misted with tears. â€Å"Neither of you understand,† she said. â€Å"You are thinking that I can marry and settle here like any other lady of Florence. But I cannot be like other ladies. How could I keep a household of servants who will watch my every move? How could I live in one place where the people will see that the years do not touch me? There will never be a normal life for me.† She drew a deep breath and looked at them each in turn. â€Å"Who chooses to be my husband must give up the life of sunlight,† she whispered. â€Å"He must choose to live under the moon and in the hours of darkness.† â€Å"Then you must choose someone who is not afraid of shadows,† Damon said, and Stefan was surprised by the intensity of his voice. He had never heard Damon speak so earnestly or with so little affectation. â€Å"Katherine, look at my brother: will he be able to renounce the sunlight? He is too attached to ordinary things: his friends, his family, his duty to Florence. The darkness would destroy him.† â€Å"Liar!† cried Stefan. He was seething now. â€Å"I am as strong as you are,brother , and I fear nothing in the shadows or the sunlight either. And I love Katherine more than friends or family-† â€Å"-or your duty? Do you love her enough to give that up as well?† â€Å"Yes,† Stefan said defiantly. â€Å"Enough to give up everything.† Damon gave one of his sudden, disturbing smiles. Then he turned back to Katherine. â€Å"It would seem,† he said, â€Å"that the choice is yours alone. You have two suitors for your hand; will you take one of us or neither?† Katherine slowly bowed her golden head. Then she lifted wet blue eyes to both of them. â€Å"Give me until Sunday to think. And in the meantime, do not press me with questions.† Stefan nodded reluctantly. Damon said, â€Å"And on Sunday?† â€Å"Sunday evening at twilight I will make my choice.† Twilight†¦ the violet deep darkness of twilight†¦ The velvet hues faded around Stefan, and he came to himself. It was not dusk, but dawn, that stained the sky around him. Lost in his thoughts, he had driven up to the edge of the woods. To the northwest he could see Wickery Bridge and the graveyard. New memory set his pulse pounding. He had told Damon he was willing to give up everything for Katherine. And that was just what he had done. He had renounced all claim to the sunlight, and had become a creature of darkness for her. A hunter doomed to be forever hunted himself, a thief who had to steal life to fill his own veins. And perhaps a murderer. No, they had said the girl Vickie would not die. But his next victim might. The worst thing about this last attack was that he remembered nothing of it. He remembered the weakness, the overpowering need, and he remembered staggering through the church door, but nothing after. He'd come to his senses outside with Elena's scream echoing in his ears-and he had raced to her without stopping to think about what might have happened. Elena†¦ For a moment he felt a rush of pure joy and awe, forgetting everything else. Elena, warm as sunlight, soft as morning, but with a core of steel that could not be broken. She was like fire burning in ice, like the keen edge of a silver dagger. But did he have the right to love her? His very feeling for her put her in danger. What if the next time the need took him Elena was the nearest living human, the nearest vessel filled with warm, renewing blood? I will die before touching her, he thought, making a vow of it. Before I broach her veins, I will die of thirst. And I swear she will never know ray secret. She will never have to give up the sunlight because of me. Behind him, the sky was lightening. But before he left, he sent out one probing thought, with all the force of his pain behind it, seeking for some other Power that might be near. Searching for some other solution to what had happened in the church. But there was nothing, no hint of an answer. The graveyard mocked him with silence. Elena woke with the sun shining in her window. She felt, at once, as if she'd just recovered from a long bout of the flu, and as if it were Christmas morning. Her thoughts jumbled together as she sat up. Oh. She hurt all over. But she and Stefan-that made everything right. That drunken slob Tyler†¦ But Tyler didn't matter anymore. Nothing mattered except that Stefan loved her. She went downstairs in her nightgown, realizing from the light slanting in the windows that she must have slept in very late. Aunt Judith and Margaret were in the living room. â€Å"Good morning, Aunt Judith.† She gave her surprised aunt a long, hard hug. â€Å"And good morning, pumpkin.† She swept Margaret off her feet and waltzed around the room with her. â€Å"And-oh! Good morning, Robert.† A little embarrassed at her exuberance and her state of undress, she put Margaret down and hurried into the kitchen. Aunt Judith came in. Though there were dark circles under her eyes, she was smiling. â€Å"You seem in good spirits this morning.† â€Å"Oh, I am.† Elena gave her another hug, to apologize for the dark circles. â€Å"You know we have to go back to the sheriff's to talk to them about Tyler.† â€Å"Yes.† Elena got juice out of the refrigerator and poured herself a glass. â€Å"But can I go over to Vickie Bennett's house first? I know she must be upset, especially since it sounds like not everybody believes her.† â€Å"Do you believe her, Elena?† â€Å"Yes,† she said slowly, â€Å"I do believe her. And, Aunt Judith,† she added, coming to a decision, â€Å"something happened to me in the church, too. I thought-† â€Å"Elena! Bonnie and Meredith are here to see you.† Robert's voice sounded from the hallway. The mood of confidence was broken. â€Å"Oh†¦ send them in,† Elena called, and took a sip of orange juice. â€Å"I'll tell you about it later,† she promised Aunt Judith, as footsteps approached the kitchen. Bonnie and Meredith stopped in the doorway, standing with unaccustomed formality. Elena herself felt awkward, and waited until her aunt left the room again to speak. Then she cleared her throat, her eyes fixed on a worn tile in the linoleum. She sneaked a quick glance up and saw that both Bonnie and Meredith were staring at that same tile. She burst into laughter, and at the sound they both looked up. â€Å"I'm too happy to even be defensive,† Elena said, holding out her arms to them. â€Å"And I know I ought to be sorry about what I said, and Iam sorry, but I just can't be all pathetic about it. I was terrible and I deserve to be executed, and now can we just pretend it never happened?† â€Å"Youought to be sorry, running off on us like that,† Bonnie scolded as the three of them joined in a tangled embrace. â€Å"And with Tyler Smallwood, of all people,† said Meredith. â€Å"Well, I learned my lesson on that score,† Elena said, and for a moment her mood darkened. Then Bonnie trilled laughter. â€Å"And you scored the big one yourself-Stefan Salvatore! Talk about dramatic entrances. When you came in the door with him, I thought I was hallucinating. How did youdo it?† â€Å"I didn't. He just showed up, like the cavalry in one of those old movies.† â€Å"Defending your honor,† said Bonnie. â€Å"What could be more thrilling?† â€Å"I can think of one or two things,† said Meredith. â€Å"But then, maybe Elena's got those covered, too.† â€Å"I'll tell you all about it,† Elena said, releasing them and stepping back. â€Å"But first will you come over to Vickie's house with me? I want to talk to her.† â€Å"You can talk tous while you're dressing, and while we're walking, and while you're brushing your teeth for that matter,† said Bonnie firmly. â€Å"And if you leave out one tiny detail, you're going to be facing the Spanish Inquisition.† â€Å"You see,† said Meredith archly, â€Å"all Mr. Tanner's work has paid off. Bonnie now knows the Spanish Inquisition is not a rock group.† Elena was laughing with sheer ebullience as they went up the stairs. Mrs. Bennett looked pale and tired, but invited them in. â€Å"Vickie's been resting; the doctor said to keep her in bed,† she explained, with a smile that trembled slightly. Elena, Bonnie, and Meredith crowded into the narrow hallway. Mrs. Bennett tapped lightly at Vickie's door. â€Å"Vickie, sweetheart, some girls from school to see you. Don't keep her long,† she added to Elena, opening the door. â€Å"We won't,† Elena promised. She stepped into a pretty blue-and-white bedroom, the others right behind her. Vickie was lying in bed propped up on pillows, with a powder-blue comforter drawn up to her chin. Her face was paper-white against it, and her heavy-lidded eyes stared straight ahead. â€Å"That's how she looked last night,† Bonnie whispered. Elena moved to the side of the bed. â€Å"Vickie,† she said softly. Vickie went on staring, but Elena thought her breathing changed slightly. â€Å"Vickie, can you hear me? It's Elena Gilbert.† She glanced uncertainly at Bonnie and Meredith. â€Å"Looks like they gave her tranquilizers,† said Meredith. But Mrs. Bennett hadn't said they'd given her any drugs. Frowning, Elena turned back to the unresponsive girl. â€Å"Vickie, it's me, Elena. I just wanted to talk to you about last night. I want you to know that I believe you about what happened.† Elena ignored the sharp glance Meredith gave her and continued. â€Å"And I wanted to ask you-† â€Å"No!† It was a shriek, raw and piercing, torn from Vickie's throat. The body that had been as still as a wax figure exploded into violent action. Vickie's light-brown hair whipped across her cheeks as she tossed her head back and forth and her hands flailed at the empty air. â€Å"No! No!† she screamed. â€Å"Do something!† Bonnie gasped. â€Å"Mrs. Bennett! Mrs. Bennett!† Elena and Meredith were trying to hold Vickie on the bed, and she was fighting them. The shrieking went on and on. Then suddenly Vickie's mother was beside them, helping to hold her, pushing the others away. â€Å"What did you do to her?† she cried. Vickie clutched at her mother, calming down, but then the heavy-lidded eyes glimpsed Elena over Mrs. Bennett's shoulder. â€Å"You're part of it! You're evil!† she screamed hysterically at Elena. â€Å"Keep away from me!† Elena was dumbfounded. â€Å"Vickie! I only came to ask-† â€Å"I think you'd better leave now. Leave us alone,† said Mrs. Bennett, clasping her daughter protectively. â€Å"Can't you see what you're doing to her?† In stunned silence, Elena left the room. Bonnie and Meredith followed. â€Å"It must be drugs,† said Bonnie once they were out of the house. â€Å"She just went completely nonlinear.† â€Å"Did you notice her hands?† Meredith said to Elena. â€Å"When we were trying to restrain her, I got hold of one of her hands. And it was cold as ice.† Elena shook her head in bewilderment. None of it made sense, but she wouldn't let it spoil her day. She wouldn't. Desperately, she searched her mind for something that would offset the experience, that would allow her to hold on to her happiness. â€Å"I know,† she said. â€Å"The boarding house.† â€Å"What?† â€Å"I told Stefan to call me today, but why don't we walk over to the boarding house instead? It's not far from here.† â€Å"Only a twenty-minute walk,† said Bonnie. She brightened. â€Å"At least we can finally see that room of his.† â€Å"Actually,† said Elena, â€Å"I was thinking you two could wait downstairs. Well, I'll only get to see him for a few minutes,† she added, defensively, as they looked at her. It was odd, perhaps, but she didn't want to share Stefan with her friends just yet. He was so new to her that he felt almost like a secret. Their knock on the shining oak door was answered by Mrs. Flowers. She was a wrinkled little gnome of a woman with surprisingly bright black eyes. â€Å"You must be Elena,† she said. â€Å"I saw you and Stefan go out last night, and he told me your name when he came back.† â€Å"You saw us?† said Elena, startled. â€Å"I didn't see you.† â€Å"No, no you didn't,† said Mrs. Flowers, and chuckled. â€Å"What a pretty girl you are, my dear,† she added. â€Å"A very pretty girl.† She patted Elena's cheek. â€Å"Uh, thank you,† said Elena uneasily. She didn't like the way those birdlike eyes were fixed on her. She looked past Mrs. Flowers to the stairs. â€Å"Is Stefan home?† â€Å"He must be, unless he's flown off the roof!† said Mrs. Flowers, and chuckled again. Elena laughed politely. â€Å"We'll stay down here with Mrs. Flowers,† said Meredith to Elena, while Bonnie rolled her eyes in martyrdom. Hiding a grin, Elena nodded and mounted the stairs. Such a strange old house, she thought again as she located the second stairway in the bedroom. The voices below were very faint from here, and as she went up the steps they faded entirely. She was wrapped in silence, and as she reached the dimly lit door at the top, she had the feeling she had entered some other world. Her knocking sounded very timid. â€Å"Stefan?† She could hear nothing from inside, but suddenly the door swung open.Everyone must look pale and tired today , thought Elena, and then she was in his arms. Those arms tightened about her convulsively. â€Å"Elena. Oh, Elena†¦Ã¢â‚¬  Then he drew back. It was just the way it had been last night; Elena could feel the chasm opening between them. This Inconvenience caused Madame Lose to beg her poor husband for money and made him believe she should be pampered Like the wealthier women. She then dedicated her life to Ralston her social status equal to or above that of the wealthier women in the city. During the extravagant party Madame Eloise is commemorated as an eminent woman praised by the upperclassmen and upperclassmen and finally content with her life for the first time. At the party she, She danced madly, ecstatically, drunk tit pleasure, with no thought for anything, In the triumph of her beauty, in the pride of her success, In a cloud of happiness made up of this universal homage and admiration, of the desires she had aroused, of the completeness of a victory so dear to her feminine heart, (Lines Madame Eloise was so proud of herself that she disregarded every aspect of her life other than the party. She didnt care what was going on with her husband, rather fooling around with the other guests, particularly men. She finally felt that this exciting, expensive, care-free lifestyle is the one she was destined to live In. Once Madame Lose carelessly misplaces the diamond necklace, her whole life flips upside down and she comes to grips with reality. Madame all day long, in the same state of bewilderment at this fearful catastrophe. [Mr.. ] Eloise came home at night, his face lined and pale; he had discovered nothing, (Lines Madame Eloise finally began to develop a sense of what a real life is like, one with trials, mistakes, and disadvantages. At this point she drops all of the glamour of the nights previous, and worries that she may disappoint her friend and Is no longer proud and full of herself. This realization of the truth pushes Madame Lose on her journey into a transforming personality aimed at gratitude and fulfillment. Before Madame Eloise attends the party she feels downcast about her social class, while she is at the party she feels satisfied and loved, and after losing the valuable necklace she transitions into a humble and content middle class housewife. In the ginning of the story Madame Eloise is only worried about materials such as gold the party she is the center of attention and blissfully accepts all of the compliments about her 400 franc dress and expensive borrowed Jewelry. Finally she loses the necklace and all of her pride and carelessness along with it, her attitude had changed for the better. Readers should take this as a lesson to appreciate what you have while you still have it, because one simple mistake can mess up everything. Gratitude and humbleness can take a person farther than blind greed and pride.

On the original article you write that this is not a safe assumption. How so?Distillation does purify water, but it cant remove all contaminants. Actually, distilled water can be very impure. Consider how distillation works. First, youre basically boiling water and then letting it cool to collect it again. Ideally contaminants with different boiling points will be removed, if you are careful to collect the distilled liquid at exactly the right temperature and pressure. Its not as easy as it sounds. Plus, there are contaminants that wont separate from the water just from vaporization. Sometimes the distilling process actually adds contaminants that werent originally present, from the glassware or metal components.For distilled drinking water, keep in mind even if the distillation process is scrupulous, impurities come from the container into which the water is placed. Gender of Italian Nouns - Genere del Nome In Italian, the gender of a noun can be maschile (masculine) or femminile (feminine). Regarding people and animals, the distinction is in relation to sex; nouns of male living beings are masculine: padre (father), scrittore (writer), infermiere (nurse), gatto (cat), leone (lion), while nouns of female living beings are feminine: madre (mother), scrittrice (writer), infermiera (nurse), gatta (cat), leonessa (lioness). However, there is not always a correspondence between grammar gender and natural gender. There are, in fact, several nouns of the type that, while considered feminine in grammatical gender, denote men: la guardia (guard), la vedetta (sentry), la sentinella (sentry), la recluta (recruit), la spia (spy). Conversely, there are other nouns that refer to women, even though they are grammatically considered the male gender: il soprano, il mezzosoprano, il contralto. In these instances, the agreement of words that refer to the noun should take into account the grammatical gender: La guardia à ¨ svelta.The guard is quick. La sentinella à ¨ attenta.The sentinel is attentive. Il soprano à ¨ bravo. (not bravo)The soprano is good. Le reclute sono arrivate. (not arrivati).The recruits arrived. For the nouns of things (both concrete and abstract) the distinction between genere maschile or genere femminile is purely conventional; only with use over time have words such as abito, fiume, and clima been assigned the masculine gender, while others such as cenere, sedia, crisi have been established as feminine. Masculine or Feminine? Besides experience and consulting the dictionary, there are two elements that can help determine the gender of a noun: the significance and the ending of the word.
